Denver, Colorado is the largest city of Colorado and the Capital of the state. Denver is also the second-most populous county in Colorado. The downtown district is located approximately 12 miles east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, on the western edge of the High Plains, just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. It's nickname is "The Mile High City" because it is 5280 feet in elevation, making it one of the highest major cities of the United States.
With a 2013 estimated population of 649,495, Denver ranks 22nd of the most populous US city.
Denver City was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush.
Denver is also home to four major sports teams, major museums and a wide variety of neighborhoods that make the city a destination in its own right.
